As part of our education programme we organised an event with Kurdish Middle Eastern Women’s Organisation on International Women’s Day (8 March) discussing honour killing and domestic violence within the Iraqi Kurdish community, which unfortunately continues to be an issue in the Islington Iraqi and Kurdish community. This year alone FIR has referred 6 women to KMEWO experiencing domestic violence. The event was opened with a speech from our development worker Abbas who discussed domestic violence, honour based crimes and other forms of human rights abuses that still exist in Iraq and Kurdistan. One of our volunteers Suham read out a poem. Sawsan Salim Director from Kurdish and Middle Eastern Women’s Organisation (our partner organisation) made a speech of the story of 8th of March and the current struggles of women in the Middle East and the world.
