Kurdistan must protect journalists

On the 5^th of December 2013, Kawa was shot by a group of gunmen outside his home in the town of Kalar in front of his mother.

Three days before his death Kawa had announced on his Facebook page that he had documents relating to a corruption case that he was planning to write about in Rayal magazine.  Kawa was the editor of Rayal and a correspondent for Awene newspaper.

Following the murders of Sorani Mama Hama in 2008; Sardasht Osman in May 2010  and

Wedat Hussein Ali August 2016.

All these murders are stark examples of the dangers facing independent journalists in the region.
